Mo - "The Alchemist"

Working on that formula to transform people to tango dancers

Mo became addicted to Tango since 2010 when he had his first class in Sydney.

The dance, the music and the history captivated Mo and almost 15 years later he enjoys dancing, DJing and practising.

He has trained with dance icons including Sebastian Achaval & Roxana Suarez, Andres Laza Moreno, Lorena Ermocida, Leandro Oliver and Laila Rezk and many more,

Mo is also a well renown Tango DJ. He is invited to many festivals in Australia and overseas. In the tango Mo searches for connection with his partner and the music. He continues to travel, learn and dance through traveling to Argentina, Europe and Asia. He is passionate about the tango music and sharing his tango knowledge to create a more dynamic tango community in Sydney.

What would Mo tell his younger tango self?

"Hang in there, the tango journey has its ups and downs, enjoy it and treat it like a marathon and not a sprint. Let go of the ego, be open to feedback and get a private lesson every now and then. It will eventually pay off"

Mona - "The Tigress"

She's a Force of Nature bigger than Life itself.

Mona had shown her signs of obsession with tango since her first class in 2014. Her words were” Give me 2 years and I will be one of the best”.

Well, that was a prophecy that turned true. She has grown to be one of the most acclaimed social tango dancers in Australia. Her style projects power, elegance and style, as an active tanguera. Now, Mona travels to dance and DJ around the world.

Her love for tango as an opportunity of expression is inspiring and she never misses a chance to share with others what she's learned and discovered over the years. She insists on the importance of everyone getting familiar with tango music because, like in any interaction, we must listen to really understand our surrounding.

"You are very lucky. Tango is a unique gift life gave you and will open dimensions, realities and imaginaria that will interlace into a madness of experiences. Receive that gift!"

Sonny - "Mr. Dapper"

Somehow, he manages to change his watches in between the songs to match his mood.

Sonny stumbled upon tango by chance, in 2009 in Hobart, and he abandoned his first love, salsa to follow his newfound and ultimate love: tango. Avidly he started learning and training until he became an exemplary dancer. Sonny is a true inspiration for any dancer, his tenacity, his curiosity and his love for tango are unstoppable. He is a generous tanguero, sharing his knowledge and dance wherever he goes. And he goes around the world.

He believes that tango dancers should not try to fit the steps into the music but let the music lead your movement.

Andrea - "The Temptress"

She brings to tango the embrace you always remember

For her, dance is the most beautiful form of communication and expression. It is about listening to herself, her body, her mind, her emotions, while the combination of these elements creates an original form of expression in connection with yourself, with your partner, with the audience. This feeling, and therefore the dance as such, is special and ephemeral. It takes place in a concrete and unrepeatable moment, which makes it unique and beautiful. Andrea is a dancer.

She got captivated by tango – it was love at first sight. At present, in addition to tango, she's actively involved in contemporary dance and yoga, but she's also using every opportunity to gain new dance or movement experiences and skills.

David -"The Rock"

Always ready to hire a van and come over to fix something

David has been dancing tango since 2010. A fondness for the music led him to try tango DJing in 2015, first at small events in Sydney and then on rare occasions, at several tango festivals in Australia. He is a passionate team member that organises tango events with his friends at STC. A love for music quality has led David to manage sound systems for many events. David is the current president of Tango Synergy, a not-for-profit organisation with membership of 200 tango dancers in Sydney.

What would David tell his younger tango self?

You can't tango in street shoes. Just take a chance, buy the shoes, it's worth it.

Alex - "DJ Alex"

Through tango music and expression to it, through connected movement on the dancefloor we release joy-hormones, and why himself and many others become addicted to it. If tango is truly for you, count yourself blessed because it's a great addiction.

DJ Alex comes and assists in the classes, working with STC students to help them upskill faster.

What would DJ Alex tell his younger tango self?

Tango takes patience. Give yourself at least one or two years before judging if tango is for you or not. You won’t regret it.

Georgia - "Aphrodite"

She turns the heads as soon as she steps on the dance floor.

Georgia attended her first tango class in 2014. Since then, her life has been deeply entwined with this dance. As someone who has always been captivated by music, especially the soul-stirring tunes of the old orchestras, stepping into tango felt like coming home.

It all started in Athens, where she not only learned the steps but also jumped right into the heart of the local tango community. She started DJing and, along with some friends, began hosting their own milonga nights. For Georgia, tango is more than a dance; it's about connection. After spending a transformative 2023 in Buenos Aires, Georgia returned to Sydney, energized with a commitment to help the local tango community thrive. She is passionate about sharing the joy and connectivity that tango offers.

Georgia comes and assists in the classes, working with STC students to help them upskill faster.

What would Georgia tell his younger tango self?

If she could give advice to her younger self, it would be to slow down and embrace every misstep as part of the learning process. She would advise not to rush; the deeper beauty of tango unfolds with time.

Mariko - "Cheeky She Wolf"

No one can escape her. She's there watching and protecting the space.

Mariko fell in love with Tango in 2001. That lead her to the separation with a non-tango partner. She enjoyed milonga (social dancing events) around the world.

Due to her single parenting from 2002 to 2020, she scarcely took lesson and attended events, but the love for tango stayed there, dormant, waiting.

Since Covid ended, she started the tango outing with no limit!

In 2023 spent over two months in Athens, dancing every night and taking lessons with Loukas Balokas at Tango Fix.

Now she's learning lots, correcting technique with the personal tips from the helpers of “Sydney Tango Collective “.

Her wish is to be asked to dance when 100 years old - Fingers crossed!

Mariko participates in STC classes and plays the hostess for Practica Loca, welcoming guests. And collecting their entry fee. ;)
